New BMAA Council member

Spencer Harvey

It suddenly dawned on me that introducing and educating members on who I am could be the perfect opportunity to live a dream. Those who don’t know me could be told anything and would have no reason to disbelieve the rhetoric. Momentarily, or maybe longer I could be 6ft 2” tall, an ex-England Rugby Player or Rear of the Year 1998. Unfortunately the truth is a little less interesting, although I have been compared to an arse on more than one occasion, and I was once the purveyor of world class sperm, having two amazingly beautiful daughters.

There is a small possibility that you have encountered me in my business life; owning a couple of small companies, but more likely we have met if you have been to Broadmeadow Flying Club where I was Treasurer, Secretary or Chairman for 10-years. I fly flex and fixed, with just over 1000hrs in the book and still reside at the best club in the country along with my trusty Nynja.

A below ordinary bloke who can’t understand why more people are not infected, and an extraordinary wife who thinks I’m too affected by our sport. Bemused by the static nature of our member numbers, I had been in conversation and correspondence with several council members throughout the year and had my offer of help with a marketing strategy accepted by one of our serving volunteers when he suggested that I be co-opted to the council to aid in this process, but I declined due to a business situation that needed concluding. I was therefore somewhat surprised, although delighted when I informed the council of my intention to stand in this year’s council elections to be asked if I would be willing to fulfil a “casual vacancy” as a result of a resignation.

I have extensive experience with marketing and especially exhibitions and shows, and I am always amazed by the amount of talent and ability I meet amongst our members at fly-ins and flying events and dream about what we could achieve if harnessed. By increasing our membership, everyone should benefit, manufacturers, schools and most importantly us. While I am delighted to be asked to help with our hobby in whatever way I can, if I can have an influence in expanding our appeal and therefore increasing membership it would be dream achievement. Be prepared to be asked.
